It's coming... ever so surely, ever so warmly... The impending days of summer.

For New Englanders, spring-going-on-summer is a much anticipated time - and for some - it contains a winter's worth of much needed hope and inspiration.

The water, whether salty sea, glassy lake, rushing river, or string thin stream, warms just enough to lure humans in and under. Sunny days are often spent intermittently submerged and cool, and sun bathed

To pass days in alternative states of terrestrial warmth (sun bathing) and  aquatic cool (swimming, wading, floating) is to achieve an oh-so-heavenly state of life right here on earth. So find your spot, position your Loll, and lounge joyfully away into summer's sweetness. The chance comes only once per year!

We mentioned in Monday's post how Loll's offerings take into consideration your home's dogs, and cats for that matter...

... But it's also true that Minnesota's finest milk jug alchemists have considered the residential needs of our wild, feathered friends as well.

Hurray! Loll, Outdoor Furniture for the Modern Lollygagger, has arrived at 75 Market Street - and it looks right at home alongside Furniturea's Rural Modern indoor furnishings!

As most Mainers know, there is an absolute dearth of options when it comes to outdoor furniture. There are high quality pieces, which are formal, traditional, and conventional... and there are less expensive, sometimes colorful, plastic pieces, which last a few seasons at best. Sturdy, attractive, contemporary products have simply been unavailable... until now.

Loll - recycled, outdoor, made-in-Minnesota, furniture - is exactly what Maine's been lacking. And it's especially fitting for Loll to assume fresh New England digs here with us - where simple lines and bold color come alive in iconic designs that are made responsibly, locally, and with original flare. So come one, come all, to experience the stylish (and comfortable) transformation of thousands of milk jugs into seating, tables, accessories, and more.

(and it's for modern pooches, too, you know!)

There's some cynical doubt in elite spheres furniture design. People wonder whether really good ideas are possible in a culture where new projects are generated on such a tight timeline.

The still, absent time that is usually required to produce good ideas is rare in the design/manufacture/market/profit cycle of today.

And yet that still time is not on necessary to have ideas, to reflect, to question - it's essential in every other facet of human experience.

Furniturea painted modern furniture, image from Apartment Therapy

For better or worse, it's simply not enough to do what you do, insulated from community - at least not when you're in the business of making a selling goods. The marketing and promotion of products are significant separators of hobby from business.  What we've come to learn is that the story of what you do as important - if not more so - than the thing itself.

For those of us who design and produce material goods (be them widgets, wool blankets or wall shelves), the apparent power of story can be disheartening, and the shadow world of intellectual property can seem redundant, less important, and a hassle.

But the intellectual, virtual, and viral life of any product is like the air we breathe - it's as vital and essential as it gets.

The images in today's posts were generated by us, but configured, described, and re-broadcasted by other like-minded web-based entities. And so it goes... we envision the widget; we make the widget; we present our widget as intellectual property, and offer it to customers, vendors, and the anonymous web. We do so with the hope that digital and physical realms of commerce will propel the other into places and points of otherwise impossible growth.

This is the power of story in action - initiated by us, and driven by you.

Furniturea Nesting Boxes with Brahms Mount blankets. Image from Brahm Mount 2012

Good design is like good conversation; it requires points of view to generate interest.

And to achieve that desired goodness, the presence of common ground - even if faint, distant, obscure - is important, or else some would say, imperative.

Cotton Herringbone Throw, and image, from Brahms Mount

That Brahms Mount, a manufacturer of soft, cozy, machine wash and dry-able goods - the very opposite product to painted wooden furniture - has found a symbiotic friend in Furniturea is not surprising, given our different/shared combination of qualities. But to have this relationship result in Furniturea on the cover of their Spring/Summer 2012 catalog is more than just good conversation; it's brilliant!

Illustration of forsythia from hortuscamden.com

With flowers, plants and trees bursting forth with sun-cajoled fervor, it's certainly understandable - the human urge to bring what's lively outside, in.

One of the most tempting blooms to steal away indoors is the ever-vitalizing, ever-illuminant olive family shrub:Forsythia.

There's something wonderfully reassuring about Forsythia's yearlong presentation. During most months it rests quietly, in a snarled, brown heap. But come spring, it's many arms produce abundant buds that explode in masses of bright, yellow blooms.

The comfortably fallow, yet eager while active, forsythia is a New England favorite. Just when summer seems impossibly distant, the hearty forsythia alerts us all of impending delight.

Hyacinth bulb vases from coxandcox.co.uk, via remodelista

... And you just might find hidden, home decor treasure.

Sculptural Vase, and image, from Cox & Cox Co.

Following lines of inquiry, whether heavy or light, is the path to discovery. Today's line is of the unburdened variety. It's the kind that takes you from one website to another... from one shop to another... from one flower or bulb or root to another, and then back again.

Wire wall rack, and image, from Cox & Cox Co.

While the original aim here was toward transparent bulb vases (what better way to honor spring than by watching plants grow?), the purveyor of said vases had much more to offer than truncated-hourglass vessels alone. Cox & Cox is overall more cottage/country than rural/modern in aesthetic, but there are several crossover gems - ones that would shine along brightly with Furniturea's furnishings and accessories.

Lattice-wire wall shelves, squat porcelain vases, and yes, pedestaled vases for Spring's champion: The hearty and heartwarming, blooming bulb!

The demystification of Spring continues with Ergen Anders' String Gardens...

Image of String Garden from ERGENS ANDERS, via stringgardens.com

Found by way of Remodelista, these suspended, sculpted orbs of growth fancy the inner gardener and daydreamer in us all.

Image of String Garden from ERGENS ANDERS, via stringgardens.com

Of course, the indoor installations have immediate whimsy, but the out of doors suspensions are just as, if not more, appealing...

Image of String Garden from ERGENS ANDERS, via stringgardens.com

... By isolating otherwise integrated plant-elements - and artificially hanging these elements in otherwise foreign depths of field - the core assumptions of landscape design are challenged in a most playful, imaginative way.

That plants grow in the ground is secondary to their growth requirement of root-worthy soil. And soil, whether terrestrial or airborne, is soil nonetheless - and as such is the trusted and true companion to our most cherished and admired photosynthesizing friends. Let us keep this in mind as we garden downward.. and look up toward new frontiers of growth!

And somehow, the work keeps getting better!

Wittenoord jewelry by Anne Ten Donkelaar. Image from anneten.nl

Anne Ten Donkelaar's specimen jewelry is a scientific, naturally-historic, and aesthetically inspirational way to end the week -and to begin a weekend of collecting, arranging, and displaying whatever it is you find on your homage-to-Anne expedition.

Of course, you may not have at your fingertips paper-thin, clear, glass orbs to preserve and display your findings, but your treasures will be treasures, all the same.

There is something so wonderful about simply stored pieces of the natural world. Untouched, as-is, and quietly removed from their place of origin.
